Death and Day of Judgement

My dear respected brothers and sisters, the human being goes through 4 stations in his existence.

  • The mother’s womb.
  • Enter into this world.
  • Depart from this world into what is called the Barzakh period. This is a time between the time of this Dunya and the Last day.
  • Yowm al qiyama, after which its jannah or jahannam

Of these 4 stages, the worldly life is very very short. We live for 50, 60, 70 years and khalas, you die. Many of us forget the purpose of this life, this is the place for you to plant your seeds, and you reap the fruits in the next life.

My dear respected brothers and sisters in Islam, Allah AWJ has created us for a noble objective, he has created us to single him out in worship alone, He tells us in the Quran.

Sahih International

And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.

We have to reflect and ask ourselves some very important questions.
1) What is my station going to be in the next life? Am I going to be of the people of the fire or of the gardens of eternal bliss?
2) What am I doing to achieve that? Am I living in a way which will reflect where I want to be in the next life?

one of the people of the past mentioned:
“Verily, the dunya is coming to an end and the Akhirah is coming to a beginning and they both have children. So be children of the Akhirah and don’t be children of the Dunya. For verily today there is action with no account and tomorrow there is account with no action” (related by ibn al Qayyim)

No one knows when you are going to depart and that time could be at any time, it’s a one way ticket, you have no idea when your time to depart but death is a certainty.
Death will happen wherever Allah AWJ decides.

  • Construction worker fell down from 7th floor. He survived. So happy he decided to go buy drinks across the road. On his way he got run over. Death was the last thought on his mind. He just survived! Little did he know that the Angel of Death that he had an appointment across the road.

A person spends a lot more time in the grave than they do alive,
When you go 6ft under you are on your own and your only companion is your good deeds
when a new couple buy a house they spend so much time on décor of new house, we are going to spend much more time in the grave so why don’t we take as much provision as possible?
The day of judgement

After the grave and the barzakh period will come the day of judgement. A day which is equal to 50000 YEARS! “A day where you will be gathered bare-foot, naked and uncircumcised.” The sun will be brought overhead so that it is unbearably hot. People will be drenched in their sweat according to how many sins they have committed. Some will be ankle deep in it; some will be in it up to their ears.
Some will receive their books in their right hand, they will have radiant faces whilst others will be in such a state of anxiety, and people will be standing in this condition for 100s of earth years and barely a few minutes of that day would have passed.
The only shade available that Day will be the shade of Allah AWJ and it is promised to 7 categories of people. Of these are:

  • Youth who grew up in the worship of Allah AWJ
  • Someone who gave anonymous charity such that his left hand did not know what his right hand gave
  • Two brothers (or sisters) who love each other for the sake of Allah and meet and depart upon that.

People feel shackled by the dunya– because they have a weak link with the akhirah, but know that this dunya is mere amusement, and each second, each heartbeat, each breath is taking you closer to death.
Death is the only thing promised in life, Allah AWJ tells us in the Quran,

Sahih International

Every soul will taste death. Then to Us will you be returned.

Every soul shall taste death. This is inevitability, you will die, and you cannot bribe the angel of death or ask him for more time.

Ibn al Qayyim (rh) mentions that:  Enjoying health, this worldly life, status, a wife or children, then surely those feelings are temporary and will eventually dissipate.

The life of this world compared to the hereafter is as if one of you were to put his finger in the ocean and take it out again then compare the water that remains on his finger to the water that remains in the ocean” (Muslim)

So what happens after The grave?

After the grave and DOJ its jannah or Naar.

As for Jannah,
Allah says: “I have prepared for my pious servants things which have never been seen by an eye, nor heard by an ear, or (even) imagined by a human being.” (Sahih Muslim)

You make it through the gates of jannah, and you will know you place in jannah more so than you knew your place in this life. And you see all these wonders in jannah but you wish to see your residence. You get there and you see this HUGE mansion, bricks of gold and silver, wonderful colours, huge, not restricted by gravity, not restricted by the mechanics of this dunya, something you have never seen before. As you get closer and closer you see something which stops you in your tracks, because of its stunning beauty. And that is your wife in jannah.
In surah Zumar Allah describes these as “Mansions above mansions, lofty and high, beneath them rivers, such is the promise of Allah, never does he fail in his promise.” so we know that jannah is not restricted to gravity or space as we know it.
In a hadith the prophet mentioned that the rooms in jannah will be such that when inside you can see outside and when outside you can see inside. Again something beyond our imagination.
so when he sees his wife, he will see her face and freeze in his tracks and he will sit there and contemplate over her beauty, beauty which we are incapable of describing in worldly terms.  Their beauty is so much that it is said by a scholar who wrote about jannah that this man will stand there and stare at her for 40 years.
Bukhari “If one of the woman of jannah were to appear to the people of this world, the distance between the heavens and earth would be filled with light and her scent would cover the whole distance and the scarf that she has on her head is better than the world and everything in it.”

Continuing-
Your real estate in jannah will be so big that you will need one of your servants to guide you around, so you take him and as soon as you walk out a wonderful smell overwhelms you and you find that it comes from the soil of jannah, you find that its white pure musk. And then you hear water, and your guide tells you that is your river which belongs to you, it’s all yours. This is the river of water, but water which tastes completely different, you start drinking, but you are not drinking because you are thirsty. Because your thirst would have been quenched already by the drink of al kawthar which would have been fed to you by prophet SAW. There is no excretion in jannah, eating and drinking is for pure pleasure, the food you eat comes out as burps which smell like musk.

Then your guide asks you what are you doing? You say I am drinking, he will say let me show you another one of your rivers which is better than this one. So you go together with your wife. (1000-2000 miles). He will tell you this is the river of milk (which doesn’t smell or taste like milk) you start drinking with your wife, and he says there is a third river which is better than this. You then go to the river of honey and again he says the same and he takes you to the last river the river of wine and you enjoy what Allah has provided for you. And then you visit the river of the prophet SAW (al-kawthar) the best river in jannah.
[Muslim]: “In jannah there is a tree under the shadow of which a rider can travel for a hundred years. Without covering the distance completely.”
[Muslim]“Definitely, the inhabitants of Jannah will visit a market every Friday. A northerly wind will blow and it will spread goodness upon their faces and clothes causing them to increase in beauty. They will then return to their wives after having become more beautiful than they were before. Their wives will say to them, “We swear by Allah, you have definitely increased in beauty”. They will also say to their wives, “We swear by Allah, you have also increased in beauty.”
We have only mentioned a fraction of the bounties promised to us in Jannah. The lowest level in jannah is the entire world and everything in it times 10, so you can only imagine how large it is and how long you will explore jannah…

So the question arises what are we doing in order to attain jannah?

Know that Allah AWJ has created you solely to single him out in worship,

Analyse yourself. If between last jummah and this jummah you haven’t made improvements, then you have some serious questioning to do for yourself. Make it your habit that you wake up each morning and set goals for improving yourself, whether it be not swearing, deleting music off your phone, listening/reading/contemplating over Quran, learning about hereafter, or whatever else it may be, because the changes won’t happen overnight but rather it will be an incremental process.

And don’t ever think that you have sinned too much or that it’s too late to repent and turn to Allah, for we know that Allah is Ar-Rahman Ar-Raheem, and that he is Al-Afuww.

Just to give you an idea of the mercy of Allah.
How much do our mothers love us? Many of us can’t even comprehend? And we know that Allah AWJ created us and he loves us many times more than our mothers.

Verily, there are one hundred (100 parts of) mercy for Allah, and it is one (1) part of this mercy by virtue of which there is mutual love between the people and ninety-nine (99) reserved for the Day of Resurrection. [Sahih Muslim]

The time to change is now, be not of the people who claim we will change tomorrow, we will start praying tomorrow. The reality at hand is that tomorrow may never come. I want you to ponder over this statement.

Jahannum (hell-fire) will be a place full of people for whom tomorrow never came.

In other words, these people thought they would practise when they are older or do a hajj when they are 65, repent and start praying. Reality is we don’t know when we will pass, death is around the corner.

We personally know of people who used these holidays to initiate the change in their lives. Use this opportunity of the week holiday away from fitnah and peer pressure, to reflect, set goals and improve yourself.

Many of us may be going through our own individual trials and we know best what they are, but remember that Allah tests those who he loves, and bear in mind that someone out there is being tested much more than you. And remember how much the prophets were tested.

Anas bin Malik (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:

“Among the inmates of Hell, a person who had led the most luxurious life in this world will be brought up on the Day of Resurrection and dipped in the Fire and will be asked: ‘O son of Adam! Did you ever experience any comfort? Did you happen to get any luxury?’ He will reply: ‘By Allah, no, my Rabb (Lord).’ And then one of the people of Jannah who had experienced extreme misery in the life of this world will be dipped in Jannah. Then he will be asked: ‘O son of Adam! Did you ever experience any misery? Did you ever encounter difficulty?’ He will say: “By Allah, no my Rabb, I neither experienced misery nor passed through hardship”. (Muslim)

Don’t ever feel dishearted, don’t ever give up, Allah will not test a soul more than it can bear, so keep steadfast and keep your eyes on the goal.

The joy in this life is in remembering Allah AWJ, and the joy of the hereafter is in seeing him AWJ

And I would like to leave you with a statement of Luqman al Hakeem when advising his son:

“Serve this world according to the time you are going to spend in it, and work for the akhirah according to the time you are going to spend in it.”

We ask Allah to guide us to the straight path and keep us steadfast and sincere
We ask Allah to grant us the ability to change our ways for the better
We ask Allah to make us of the people whom he grants the best in this world and the hereafter
We ask Allah to accept this from us and make it a means for us and not against us on yowm al qiyama.
